STAR Requirements for CRM Manufacturers

With the publication of the ANSI-AARST MS-QA Radon Measurement Systems Quality Assurance, CRM manufacturers were made aware that compliance with the Standard included the requirement that “each CRM is to be calibrated at least annually in a calibration facility that meets the requirements of a standard test atmosphere for radon as defined in this standard.” (See Section 4.3 of ANSI-AARST MS-QA at https://standards.aarst.org/ ).

Upon production of new CRMs, initial calibrations are typically performed at the manufacturing facility. To date, the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) has not enforced compliance.  In fact, as of 12/14/2020, only two CRM manufacturers have submitted applications to the NRPP and received approval as a Tertiary Chamber, to verify they meet the STAR specifications.

To allow adequate time for review and approval, NRPP must receive Chamber Certification Applications by no later than November 30, 2021.
